Fishermen question Coast Guard rescue response

January 9, 2009 staff

Editorial Note: Coast Guard Report publishes stories such at this one from the Boston Globe not to place blame today_thumbnailahead of any Coast Guard investigation, but as a tool of transparency.  We feel it important that as Guardian’s we understand how the public (the customer) perceive our actions.  Perception is reality is the eyes of the beholder, and understanding that perception often helps us in explaining Coast Guards reality.

GLOUCESTER – As Gloucester lay to rest two fishermen who died in a mysterious accident at sea, their fellow seamen raised concerns about a published report that said the Coast Guard did not launch a search-and-rescue mission for more than 2 1/2 hours after it was alerted that the vessel was in trouble.

    Mr. Jackson,

In your own words, “CoastGuardReport.org is not connected with or endorsed by the United States Coast Guard.”

That statement could not be truer and thus you should refrain from including yourself as one of us as you grossly have in your Editorial Note. You are not part of the Coast Guard and you know nothing about being a Guardian so do not insult us by trying to claim some association with the real men and women of the United States Coast Guard.

Mr. Jackson no longer owns this site, and did not make that post. The staff contributor that did leave that post is in fact a Coastie.

Readers who have followed CGR over the past year know that Mr. Jackson was ready to move on to new endeavors on several occasions over the past year.

Sea Service Group recently acquired the rights to Coast Guard Report and several other Blogs. The “Group” will make a more formal announcement on their acquisition in the near future.

The intrinsic value of the Coast Guard Report name, volume of readers, and associated interest led to the Groups desire to acquire the site.

The Group is representative of all three branches of the military that comprise the “Naval Sea Services.” Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard are in the Groups opinion the cornerstone of our Nation Defense.

Is this site still committed to “Transparency Breeding Self Correcting Behavior”?

Yes and No. CGR will continue investigative journalism which no doubt leads to transparency. Admiral Thad Allen coined the phrase, though it has not always led to self correcting behavior.
