Coast Guard may have modernized, but customers and patrons can’t find them on the Web. Almost none of the new Commands can be found on Coast Guards website. The Coast Guards Unit page still shows the old Maintenance and Logistics Commands (MLC).
If you drill down even further, MLC Pacific still list six Integrated Support Commands. All six former ISC’s are now Base Support Units (BSU). How do you find these people? Is it really business as usual?
It doesn’t get any better as you try to locate the new Personnel Support Services Units that broke away from the former ISC’s. They now report to Personnel Service Center under Rear Admiral Dan Neptun. But if you’re thinking you’ll find the PSSU’s on the PSC site, don’t hold your breath. You won’t find them. In fact, you won’t find them at all.
Wanting to get a few answers to your Health, Safety and Work Life issues? You won’t find them either. The new HSWL website will tell you where the new HSWL Support Activity Field Offices (FO) but will not provide you with a link to their services.
While you may have a hard time finding these services that used to fall under the command of the ISC Commanding Officer, don’t give up. You can always contact the Primary Support Officer for your area. The PSO has not authority, responsibility or accountability, but you can contact them nonetheless and vent your frustrations.
Oh, looking for a website for the PSO … don’t, it doesn’t exist.

Our post Coast Guard Officers Use Craigslist to Find Entertainment for Ptero Roost 2009 has generated a great deal of comments and even more controversy. Frankly, we didn’t see this coming. Readers seem to be in as much favor of our publishing the names of those involved in the Craigslist debacle as against it. Even the comments against the story seem to be suggesting we publish the names.
Coast Guard Headquarters has been silent on the issue. The last time we notified Coast Guard Headquarters of a potentially embarrassing story, they acted quickly and swiftly. In that case we found that a student at the Aviation Technical Training Command in Elizabeth City, NC had posted racial comments on his My Space account. A later investigation at the direction of Vice Admiral Robert Papp turned up additionally alarming information on other violations of the UCMJ.
We trust Vice Admiral Papp implicitly. Unfortunately, none of the officers connected to the Ptero Roost incident fall under Atlantic Area. One officer is assigned to Headquarters, the others appear to be PAC Area. Counsel suggests that there is no expectation of privacy when using a public computer, in a public setting.
More to follow.

Naval Safety Center Launches Holiday Safety Campaign.
By April Phillips, Naval Safety Center Public Affairs NORFOLK, Va.
(NNS) — With the holidays fast approaching, the Naval Safety Center has launched a comprehensive web-based campaign designed to give Sailors and their families all the resources they need to manage risk through the end of 2009 and into the early months of 2010.
“Many of us are excited about spending time with family and friends during the holidays, but it’s important to take a few minutes to plan your activities. The Naval Safety Center’s Web site is one-stop shopping for fall and winter risk management,” said Rear Adm. Arthur J. Johnson, commander, Naval Safety Center. “I encourage everyone to use all available resources to ensure a safe and happy holiday season.”
The fall and winter safety campaign includes presentations that can be downloaded and personalized for command safety standdowns. There are also plenty videos and articles for newsletters in addition to links to other resources.
For the first time, the fall and winter safety campaign includes information on suicide prevention and awareness. Although suicide has traditionally been viewed as a medical issue, Johnson said safety professionals have a role to play in ending these tragedies.
“While many of us are excited about the upcoming holidays, it’s important to look out for others who might be stressed or feel hopeless,” said Johnson. “The Naval Safety Center is committed to the DON (Department of the Navy) suicide prevention efforts, and our holiday campaign includes links to resources that provide information for anyone who thinks a shipmate might be contemplating hurting him or herself.”
The campaign can be found at http://safetycenter.navy.mil/seasonal/Fall-Winter09/index.asp.
